It's sad to see the current state of affairs in our country, and I know it happens in other countries too but there have been over the last couple of years a number of xenophobia-related attacks on black foreigners in our country. These past two weeks though have been the worst and it is a problem that our politicians have been failing to acknowledge.
That said, we know that we cannot rely on politicians to make things work. My appeal is for everyone to voice their opinion against this matter and please feel free to post comments on the group site. Personally I feel that the affected communities are living in terrible social conditions and their plight has fallen over deaf ears over the years. We cannot however sit still and comment from a distance because it could happen closer to your home too at some point. Let us make every effort possible to counter xenophobia in much as the same way we fight against racism, sexism and all the negative isms. The more people voice their concerns, the more pressure we apply on the authorities to make a meaningful intervention.
Foreign imigrants and refugees have not come here because they want to take our work but there are serious problems in their countries and they were hoping that South Africa would be a safe haven for them. Now there lives are threatened and some have died already. How soon we forget that when we were fighting for freedom, many African countries allowed our freedom fighters to live there, even at the risk of South African troops invedaing their countries and causing harm to their people. We cannot abandon our brothers and sisters in their time of need.
Let us give them hope and show love and condemn the attacks on them in the most serious of terms. Remember - "EMANCIPATE YOURSELVES FROM MENTAL SLAVERY, NONE BUT OURSELVES CAN FREE OUR MINDS". Peace to one and all and let's all say a BIG NO TO XENOPHOBIA!!
