Riddim Impact with Mighty Howard

McFly: Danke auch, sehr gerne.

Howard: Frohes Neues Jahr an Alle! Ich freue mich, eure Fragen zu beantworten.

McFly: Also wir sind jeweils zwei Musiker aus der Sam Ragga Band (SRB) und von den Chantin Kings (CK). Fabson und ich kommen von Chantin Kings und spielen dort Keys und Bass. Dazu haben wir noch Oliver und Hartmut von Sam Ragga an Orgeln und Drums. Ich habe noch ein anderes Projekt mit den beiden nebenher laufen und bin ganz froh, dass die Jungs auch noch Zeit für was Neues haben.

Howard: Ich bin der Sänger und Gitarrist.

Oliver: Die erste Zusammenarbeit gab und gibt es im Souledge, wo McFly (CK), Hartmut und ich (SRB) mit dem Besitzer Amadou die Local News Band gegründet haben.

Hartmut und Howard waren sich schon mal bei Pensi im Studio begegnet. Wir hatten auch vor Howard zu einer Dub the Club Veranstaltung einzuladen - Ich weiß nicht warum das nicht geklappt hat.

Howard: Die Idee kommt von Fatman (McFly). Wir haben uns über Myspace kennen gelernt und nach einer Jam Session mit den Chantin Kings hatte er die Idee mit Oliver und Hartmut von der Sam Ragga Band etwas Neues zu gründen.

McFly: Eigentlich wollte ich die ganze Zeit schon eine 'richtige' Reggae Band haben, ohne den ganzen Dancehall, Reggaeton und Ska Kram. Außerdem wollte ich sehr gerne neben den Local News, die eher selten mal spielen und gar nicht mehr proben, mehr mit Hardy und Olli spielen. Hartmut ist einfach der beste Reggae Drummer, den ich kenne, auch wenn ich mit anderen live viel mehr kommunizieren kann.

Mein Drummer bei Chantin Kings steht deutlich mehr mit mir im Dialog, und wir probieren gemeinsam ständig 'neue' klassische Hip Hop Grooves aus, um unseren Chantin Kings Rocksteady Sound zu verfeinern. Aber auch ohne einen Funken von Kommunikation bringt Hartmut die Band in jeder Situation sicher nach Hause.

Für mich ist der Drummer in einer Kombo einfach der Dirigent des Orchesters. Da zählt ja weit aus mehr als nur Tightness, die ja auch ein Drumloop geben könnte. Der Drummer muss halt alle zusammenhalten.

Naja, die Band habe ich wärend eines Telefonates mit Howard theoretisch zuammengesetzt, um ihm was anbieten zu können - und umso zufriedener bin ich jetzt, dass einfach mal alles geklappt hat - und jeder der Jungs Bock hat genau das zu machen, was bei Riddim Impact gefragt ist.

Howard: Fatman wanted to combine the names of the two bands to let the fans know who was in the band and what the band would sound like. It is very hard for any five people to agree on one thing. I think that is why music performance is so special.

McFly: Nicht wirklich unterwegs. Was ich zu Anfang noch für vorteilhaft hielt, fanden andere in der Band schon wieder doof, und so musste ein neuer Name gefunden werden, der jetzt auch besser neben Mighty Howard aussieht.

Ich wollte halt, dass jedem klar ist, das hier Leute von CK und Sam Ragga zusammen spielen. Weil es dann ja auch automatisch schon eine interessierte Fanbase geben müsste.

Oliver: Zunächst geht es um die Umsetzung des schon vorhandenen Studiomaterials in eine Liveshow. Natürlich ergeben sich dann auch durch Sessions neue Ideen.

Howard: I will release, in the next few months, a Single from my next Album „Chanting Di Word“ on Planet Dread Records (Hamburg). It is a mix of Roots Reggae riddims from German producers: Pensi from Ire-Hifi, Bassix, Ganjaman and Andreas Briklin. Right now, we are rehearsing all the songs from this Album and I love the sound we are making. Not only in our music, but our personalities. It is a mix never seen before.

Howard: I use Reggae Music as a way to connect with my stolen culture. That is my focus and the reason I play and write Reggae songs. Most of the text has to do with the conflict and distance between the Western (American) World, and the life in balance with the Earth that the African and Nomadic Indians respected. I sing to give a voice to those who cannot say what they feel. I sing to release my frustration at the Politics of Politicians.

I chant to praise Jah Creation. The most important reason I sing is because it makes me feel healed from all my troubles and sorrows. Chant!

McFly: Also ich hab die Songs vom Album schon zu Hause ;)

Oliver: Wir sind dabei die Songs Live umzusetzen. Album kommt.

Howard: First comes the Album „Chanting Di Word“, which is not a live Album but riddim based. I would like to record and travel with the Band through the summer and release a Live Album/DVD with Riddim Impact. My wildest dream would be to record a studio Album with Riddim Impact containing original Reggae songs this winter for next year's summer festivals.

Oliver: Sam Ragga wird es weiter geben. Die meisten von uns sind ohnehin schon in anderen Projekte tätig (Jan Delay, Dubtari, Local News).

McFly: Naja, CK war ja jetzt über zwei Jahre lang auf Selbstfindungskurs, und sind ja vor noch gar nicht so langer Zeit erst beim heutigen Rocksteady Sound angekommen. Obwohl Konzepte von Anfang an die Richtung vorgeben sollten, mussten wir ständig flexibel sein und haben dadurch aber auch eine ganze Menge schöner Shows gespielt. Auf einem Festival bei Hannover hatten wir im letzten Sommer ungefähr sieben Gastsänger mit on stage! Brimstone & Fire und Martin Zobel waren unter anderem dabei. Wir waren schon mit zwei Bussen unterwegs und es entstand der Eindruck, wir wären endlich da angelangt, wo wir immer hin wollten. Aber mir ist eigentlich klar, dass viel mehr auch nicht geht und gehen wird - für unsere Verhältnisse und die Mühe die wir uns machen, müsste das eines der Highlights sein.

Je mehr eine Band einen motivieren kann, desto mehr setzt man sich für diese auch ein. Wenn aber zukunftsweisende Fragen unbeantwortet bleiben, zieht man die Idee auch schnell wieder zurück, und vegetiert dann mit der Band dahin.

Eigentlich wollte ich auch was Neues anfangen, gerade um was machen zu können, wenn CK mal nicht so wirklich will.

Howard: Good question. These two bands have talented musicians among them. I am writing songs with Peter Belau from Chantin Kings in preparation for next year's album. I would also like to release some songs with Chantin Kings. They sound great and I think people would like what we came up with. I have lived in Hamburg for one year and have not had the chance to see Sam Ragga Band, but I have researched the group, and I know all about the big artists like Patrice and Jan Delay. I feel really lucky. I hope the bands roll on. More fire!

Howard: That was Fatty fat fat again. He had the idea to reach out to the supporters and speak to them directly. I was sceptic at first, but now I think it makes sense. Fatso is the ideas' man. He is doing a good job.

McFly: (grinsend) Danke Howard! Wer im Winter anfängt eine Band zu starten, der hat ja nicht viel Zeit für Promotion, wenn die Band am besten im Sommer zur Saison hin schon etabliert sein soll. Also haben wir so zusagen alle Infos ‚leichter zugänglich’ gemacht.

Viele MySpace Besucher lesen doch nur so lange den Bio Text, bis das erste Video geladen ist, und man sich selber ein Bild machen kann. Als brandneuer Act hat man ja ständig News anzubieten, aber wer durchsucht schon jeden Monat den Pressetext nach Veränderungen? Bei uns kann man halt monatlich, schön auf eine Minute zurechtgeschnitten, die Neuigkeiten der Band bequem am Monitor verfolgen.

Oliver: Also, mein Ziel für dieses Jahr ist es viele gute Shows vor vielen begeisterten Leuten zu spielen und uns damit als Liveperformance einen Namen zu machen.

Howard: Festivals!! Bring on the summer! I think my expectations are high, but I want to go on tour and see Jah land, play positive music for the global reggae massive, and praise Jah till my last day. I want to break all the rules. I want to play at the Monterey Jazz Festival and I can't even spell it. I have not played in many places in Germany, so I don’t know which places are good or bad. I would love to play in München again, at Club Boogaloo and I just played in Markthalle in Hamburg for XMAS Reggae Show with Jamaica Papa Curvin. We hope to succeed on the German reggae circuit and entertain the people, and I hope to find my culture.

Howard: As soon as I heard the title, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. Niculi „PicJahMan“ Constanstinescu decided it was time to make a statement about crime after the sudden death of Lucky Dube, and had the idea to photograph artist wearing a shirt that says „Artists Against Crime“. Check it out and see which artists speak out and how many there are. MySpace wins again. We met each other and took some photos. I think he is an intelligent, talented guy and I am glad he let me add my voice.
